The Challenges on High Performance Computing

Xue-bin Chi chi@sccas.cn
Computer Network Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNIC, CAS)

Abstract

High performance computing has been developing very quickly in the world, so does in China. Recently, several new supercomputing centers had been built, which had more computing power than the existing supercomputing centers of several years. The architecture of high performance computer has changed from homogenous to heterogeneous. At present, the more and more clusters are made by CPU and GPU combinations. This makes the software design into a new revolution, which is called co-design. It is also changed the traditional algorithm design for parallel computing. Therefore, we meet the challenges of high performance computer and applications. First one is power, Second is fault-tolerance, finally the third is software development. We think these three problems are the biggest challenges for the development of high performance computing.

Comparing the Laplace Transform and Parareal Algorithms

Craig C. Douglas

Abstract

Both the Laplace Transform and the Parareal family of algorithms promise to provide completely parallel
in time and space computational results. Given a random time dependent partial differential equation it is unclear
which algorithm will run faster. We define the algorithms in question, including more specific details than usual. We
define interesting parallel environments, some of which do not exist yet. Finally, we demonstrate some computational
environments in which one of the algorithms can be expected to be faster than the other algorithm.

Research and Development of Intelligent Transportation Systems

Yan Xinping

Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been developed for more than ten years in China. A new generation Intelligent TransportationSystems will be launched with the rapid development of transportationin China. Firstly, the development history of Intelligent Transport Systems is summarized. Secondly, Intelligent Transportation Systems Center, Wuhan University of Technology is introduced. It was established in September, 2000, which is one of earliest researchcenter in China. Its Goals is to improve traffic safety, reduce vehicle emission, and save transportation energy in roadway and waterway transportation field. Driving behavior & safety, traffic safety management and control, assistant driving and intelligent vehicles are research points in roadway field. Information collection technologies, accident simulation systems, safety warning and emergency systems are research points in waterway field. The research projects will also be introduced in detail. Finally, the key areas of ITS during next five years are introduced, and the development and cooperation of future are also discussed.
